최재형 전 감사원장이 국민의힘 대선 주자인 홍준표 의원 캠프에 공식 합류했습니다. 홍 의원과 최 전 원장은 17일 서울 여의도 홍 의원 캠프 사무실에서 최 전 원장 영입 행사를 열고 "정권 교체를 열망하는 국민적 여망 앞에 '확실한 정권 교체'를 통한 '정치 교체'를 실현하기 위해 힘을 합하기로 약속했다"고 밝혔습니다.
두 사람은 공동 발표문에서 "우리 두 사람은 확실한 정권 교체와 정치 교체라는 시대적 과제를 향한 오늘의 '가치 동맹'을 통해, 부패하고 무능한 현 정권의 집권 연장 야욕을 기필코 막아내고 건전한 보수의 가치를 가진 미래 세대를 양성해 대한민국의 힘찬 내일을 열어 갈 것임을 두 손 맞잡아 굳게 약속한다"고 했습니다.
또 "우리는 정권 교체라는 절체절명의 과제 앞에 가장 중요한 본선 경쟁력은 다름아닌 후보의 도덕성과 확장성이라고 굳게 믿는다"며 "특히 2030세대를 비롯한 전 세대, 그리고 야당 불모 지역을 포함한 전국적 확장성을 가진 홍 후보의 경쟁력은 확실한 정권 교체를 향한 수권 야당의 든든한 기반이 될 것"이라고 말했습니다.
홍 의원은 전날 밤 서울 양천구 최 전 원장 자택을 찾아 캠프 합류를 요청했습니다. 홍 의원은 최 전 원장을 만난 뒤 취재진을 만나 "최 전 원장님께서 같이 나라를 정상화시키자는 말씀이 있으셔서 오늘 같이 만나게 됐다"고 했습니다. 이어 "제가 며칠 전부터 우리 최 원장님 쪽에 (최 원장을) 같이 모시고 정권 탈환에 나섰으면 좋겠다, 이 허물어지는 나라를 정상화시키고 선진국 시대의 원년을 같이 만들어 가자고 제안했다"고 말했습니다.
최 전 원장은 "제가 2차 (예비) 경선에서 탈락한 이후에 많은 생각을 했다. 정권 교체, 그리고 정치 교체를 위해서 제가 할 역할이 무엇인지에 대해서 많은 고민을 했다"고 말했습니다. 그러면서 "우리 야당의 목표인 정권 교체를 위해서 보다 안정적이고 두루 세대나 지역의 신망, 지지를 얻을 수 있는 후보와 함께 해야겠다는 생각을 했다"며 홍 의원 지지 이유를 밝혔습니다.
이낙연 전 더불어민주당 당대표가 당 내 대선 경선 결과에 대해 ‘수용한다’고 입장을 표명했다. 이재명 민주당 대선 후보에 대해서는 ‘축하한다’고 밝혔습니다.
내년 대선에서 승리해 민주정부 4기를 이루자고도 했습니다. 이 전 대표의 경선 결과 수용은 당무위 결과 발표 후 2시간여, 당 선관위원회가 지난 10일 경선결과를 발표한지 약 60여시간만에 나온 셈입니다.
이 전 대표는 13일 오후 ‘사랑하는 민주당에 드리는 글’이라는 제목의 글을 캠프를 통해 기자들에게 보냈습니다. 이 전 대표는 “대통령후보 사퇴자 득표의 처리 문제는 과제를 남겼지만, 그에 대한 당무위원회 결정은 존중한다. 저는 대통령후보 경선 결과를 수용한다”며 “경선에서 승리하신 이재명 후보께 축하드린다. 이 후보가 당의 단합과 대선 승리를 위해 최선을 다해 주시리라 믿는다”고 말했습니다.
이 전 대표는 “함께 선의로 경쟁하신 추미애 박용진 정세균 김두관 이광재 최문순 양승조 동지께 감사의 마음을 전한다. 저는 민주당의 승리를 위해 노력하겠다. 민주당이 직면한 어려움을 타개하고 국민의 신임을 얻어 정권을 재창출하기 위해 제가 할 수 있는 일을 숙고하고 작은 힘이나마 보태겠다”고 밝혔습니다.
이 전 대표는 “부족한 저를 도와주시고 지지해주신 모든 분께 눈물 나도록 고맙고 미안하다. 그 고마움과 미안함을 제가 사는 날까지 갚아야 할 텐데, 그럴 수 있을지 모르겠다. 여러분의 사랑을 제 삶이 다하도록 간직하겠다”고 썼습니다.
이 전 대표는 “서로를 배려하고 존중해 주시기 바란다. 동지 그 누구에 대해서도 모멸하거나 배척해서는 안된다. 그래서는 승리할 수 없다. 그 점을 저는 몹시 걱정한다. 우리가 단합할 때, 국민은 우리를 더 안아 준다”며 “지금은 민주당의 위기다. 위기 앞에 서로를 포용하고, 그 힘으로 승리했던 것이 민주당의 자랑스러운 역사”라고 강조했습니다.
이 전 대표는 “그것이 평생을 이름없는 지방당원으로 사셨던 제 아버지의 가르침이었다. 부디 저의 고심 어린 결정과 호소를 받아 주시기를 간청 드린다”고 덧붙였습니다.
이 전 대표는 자신의 지지자를 향해 “여러분의 낙심이 희망으로 바뀔 수 있도록 제 책임을 다하겠다. 민주당이 더 혁신하고, 더 진화하고, 국민과 국가에 무한책임을 지는 더 유능한 국민정당으로 거듭나는 데 힘을 모으겠다”며 “강물은 바다를 포기하지 않는다. 우리는 나라다운 나라를 포기하지 않는다. 우리 함께 강물이 되자. 문재인 정부가 성공해야 한다. 반드시 4기 민주정부를 이루자. 기필코 대선에서 이기자”고 남겼습니다.
